Introduction
The West Sussex County Council Waste Prevention Advisor scheme was set up to support the existing waste prevention initiatives in the County. The initiative trains volunteers on the need for waste prevention and what they can do to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. These Advisors then go out into their local communities to promote waste prevention and increase awareness of waste management issues. For example:
Talks and presentations to community groups
Stalls at events throughout the County
Home visits
Phone call support to residents
E-mail queries
Support to local authorities
New ideas on waste prevention
Networking on waste issues in our communities
The project is a partnership between West Sussex County Council, the district and boroughs in the County and the University of Brighton. In the development stages of the scheme the University of Brighton (UOB) and West Sussex County Council (WSCC) jointly developed writing the modules for the course. Delivery of the course has been carried out by UOB with County partnership assistance. Support of the trained Waste Prevention Advisors is now carried out by Better Tomorrows CIC. Over 60 volunteers are now working on waste prevention initiatives throughout the county and been involved in over 200 initiatives. This site has just been launched and as we develop it further volunteers will be able to include thier own experiences and latest news on the scheme. It will provide information on waste prevention throughout the county, the work of the volunteers and tips on how to reduce your waste.
