Love Food Hate Waste

          Promotional Information & Tools

It is really important that every time we give one of these items to somebody, we explain why we are giving it to them so that it works for us in helping to prevent food waste.

Some of the items are given away at all events e.g. Rice Scoops and Spaghetti Measures, some of them are only given away at smaller events like workshops e.g. aprons.

Aprons – to be worn at all times in the kitchen when preparing and cooking food, to remind you to minimise food waste and save money.

Food Waste Diary – completing one of these only takes one week and will make you totally aware of exactly what is happening to the food that you buy. It will also bring to your attention any specific areas of food waste that you have so that you can start to think of ways to avoid this waste and save money.

The Apple Lovers Love Food Hate Waste Booklet – Contains some good, simple food management tips to help you get the best out of the food that you buy, with a view to reducing food waste and saving money. Useful information on what food waste really means, getting the best out of our storage heroes, perfect portions, what those dates on food packaging really mean, how to save time and money and some delicious recipes for using up some of those leftovers.

Sets of Recipe Cards/Tips Cards – 12 cards with a leftovers recipe on one side and food tips on the other side.  Tips include useful information on storage and using up leftovers for dairy products, meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. We give these recipe cards away because we want you to fall in love with your leftovers and not throw them away.

Shopping List on Magnet + 2 Pads – this is a great aid to good planning, which is a key to reducing food waste.  Place the magnet with shopping list on your fridge door and then when you are running low on an item, jot it down on the pad. This starts your next shopping list.

Then, before you go shopping, check all of your food cupboards, the fridge and the freezer to add things to your list.  It is especially important to check the contents of your fridge because it is there that you keep the more expensive items of food and they are also the items of food that have the shortest life.

Then do a meal plan for the week and add the ingredients to the list on the pad to make up your shopping list.  Never go shopping without a list and never buy anything that isn’t on the list – we’ve all done it and had to cope with unnecessary duplication of food items when we get home from shopping.

Spaghetti Measure – pasta is in the top ten of foods that we throw away in the UK.  One reason is that it is difficult to measure, especially spaghetti because if you try to weigh out the portions, it just rolls off the scales.  Many of us just put a handful in the pan and then think that it doesn’t look very much so we add more and more and then end up with a mountain of it.  Put your dried spaghetti into the holes in the spaghetti measure.  There are three different sized holes, for one, two and three adult portions.

If you are cooking pasta shapes, weigh out 3ozs/75g when you open the packed and find a container in the kitchen that it fits into perfectly.  This can then be used as your individual portion measure.  A mug or bowl that is the right size would work well.

Rice Scoop – rice is also in the top ten of foods that we throw away in the UK.  Too often we cannot be bothered to weigh it and as with spaghetti, when we put it in the pan, it doesn’t look very much.  Inside the rice scoop, opposite the handle are markings: 100ml at the top, 75ml, 50ml and 25ml.  75ml is the average adult portion of rice and then increase or decrease to find out what is the right level for you.

Bag Clips – really good for keeping bags of food sealed in the fridge or freezer but also a great way to keep things like bread, cereal, biscuits or crisps fresh for longer after they have been opened, by keeping air out.

Fridge Thermometer – it is really important to keep your fridge at the right temperature.  Many people actually run their fridges too warm with the result that the food does not last as long as it could.  Running your fridge too cold is also not good as it costs you more in electricity and it can cause freezing of things like cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce, things which are then spoilt because they do not recover.

Eat Well, Waste Less – An A-Z guide to using up leftovers – a small book with a great number of recipes for using up leftovers.

Taste West Sussex – an award-winning magazine all about local West Sussex foods and food producers.  Full of tasty recipes and interesting articles.  This magazine supports locally produced food and smaller local businesses.

Food Storage Containers – leftovers will often keep for longer if stored in a container before being put into the fridge.  Put your leftovers from dinner into the container and then it’s ready to take to work the next day for your lunch.
